DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOPS
TEACHING PHOTOGRAPHY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Insight OUT! PRIDE Workshop 2011
Trix Rosen, Project Director - Hudson Pride Connections Center, 32 Jones St. Jersey City NJ
The INSIGHT OUT! PRIDE Digital Storytelling Workshop was designed to be an advocacy project that gives participants a ‘visual voice’ of expression as a means of connecting to their creative vision, their family and community, and their educational aspirations. The program is tailored to LGBTQ participants affected by growing up in an environment of uncertainty, discrimination, fear and violence. Each artist poignantly depicts images that mirror their personal views about masculinity, femininity and their LGBTQ identity. As they learn to document their own lives through photography, they grow in confidence and leadership skills, empower themselves and heal.
The INSIGHT OUT! PRIDE project began a successful eight week pilot program with six GLBTQ participants aged 18-35 in May 2011 at the Hudson Pride Connections Center in Jersey City NJ. It proved to be an ideal pairing of project and place as the mission of Hudson Pride is to provide social support, guidance, HIV prevention education, computer access and job development training. It is Hudson County’s only program dedicated to providing direct services for LGBT participants from teens to elders.
The INSIGHT OUT! PRIDE Digital Storytelling Workshop was initiated and developed by Photojournalist Trix Rosen and based on her experience as senior trainer, editor and international advisor to the award-winning InSIGHT Out! Creative Workshop and Cultural Exchange Program based in Bangkok, Thailand.
