INSIGHT OUT! Kalinga Province, The Philippines- Indigenous Community
Trix Rosen, founder of Insight Out! Digital Storytelling Workshops, travelled to the northern indigenous region of the Philippines in March 2013 to complete a 25-year photographic project, ‘A Kalinga Village Journeys through Time.’ She brought with her two cameras from the international InSIGHT OUT! Creative Workshop & Exchange Project, and taught a photography workshop to local Kalinga youth. Together, they documented historic sites and artifacts in Luplupa and Bugnay, rural traditional villages nestled deep among the rice-terraces in the Cordillera Mountains, and in Bado Dangwa, an urban barangay close to Tabuk, the provincial capital.
Her students produced still images and animated movies, and conducted written and video interviews with their elders. One of the young women, Mary Grace Puyoc, wrote that her “pride in the artistic and cultural heritage of her ancestors was reinforced by the experience of using the camera.” The participants could see that photographs can provide a historic record of the heart, soul and traditions of the elders who built and sustained their ancient culture.
